Yes. Each render costs about 500 tokens. Signed-up users get 10,000 tokens/day free — enough for ~20 sketches every day without paying.
FLUX ControlNet with Canny edge detection. The ControlNet reads the lines of your sketch as a structural constraint and the diffusion model fills in the rest — giving much tighter adherence to your drawing than a plain image-to-image pass.
JPG, PNG, and WebP up to 10MB. Black-and-white line drawings on a white background work best, but pencil sketches and even phone-photos of paper sketches work fine — the edge detector is forgiving.
Photorealistic, illustration, anime, watercolor, oil painting, and 3D render. Each uses a slightly different prompt prefix plus tuned generation parameters. You can add any style words directly in your prompt too.
Use a clear sketch with clean lines, write a specific prompt ("a red sports car on a mountain road at sunset" beats "a car"), and pick High adherence if you want the AI to stick to your lines, Low if you want it to interpret more loosely.
High keeps the final image tight to your sketch — every line preserved, the AI just colors it in. Medium is balanced. Low gives the AI more creative freedom to deviate and fill in details you didn't draw.
Yes. You own the output and can use it for personal or commercial work — marketing, products, client deliverables, print, the lot. Free.ai claims no rights over what you generate.
No. Your upload is processed and discarded immediately. The generated image is kept on our CDN for 24h (7 days for paid users) at the share link, then deleted.

Image-to-image uses the whole image (colors, shading, everything) as a starting point — outputs often look like recolored versions of the input. Sketch-to-image uses only the edges as structural guidance, so the AI has full freedom to invent color, lighting, and material — while still respecting your composition.
Yes. Snap a well-lit photo of your paper sketch and upload it. Clean contrast helps — if the paper is yellowed or shadowy, the edge detector still picks up the lines, but a scan or a black marker on white paper gives the sharpest result.
