How to write a B-roll prompt that cuts
One shot, not a montage
AI video generators are trained on single-subject clips. Asking for 'a cafe scene showing the whole menu' gives flicker. Asking for 'a single latte pour in close-up' gives a usable insert.
Name the lighting
Morning light from the left. Overhead fluorescent. Neon key. Lighting is 70% of how polished the clip reads, and the single prompt word that most changes the output.
One action verb
Pours, kneads, flips, turns, opens, closes. Compound actions ('pours then stirs then lifts') confuse motion models and cause morphing artifacts mid-clip.
Match aspect to your A-roll
9:16 for vertical social. 16:9 for YouTube. 1:1 for IG feed. B-roll cut into the wrong aspect becomes stretched or letterboxed and breaks immersion.
