Model:

Honest constraint: The expander adds length with transitions, clarifying asides, and concrete rephrasing — but it will NOT invent new facts, statistics, studies, or specific claims. If you need more content-level substance, paste additional notes into the source rather than asking the expander to fill gaps.

Balanced expansion to roughly 2× length. Fleshes out sentences, adds transitions and clarifying rephrasings. Best general-purpose setting.

Text Expander — FAQ

Free.ai Text Expander takes short text (outlines, bullet points, rough drafts) and expands it to ~1.5×, ~2×, or ~3× the length by adding transitions, clarifying phrases, and concrete rephrasings. HARD CONSTRAINT: it never invents new facts, statistics, studies, or citations. Method picker lets you choose HOW it expands: clarify (unpack dense ideas), transitions (connect points), concrete (abstract → specific), rephrase (say it two ways), or bullets → prose (outline conversion).

Because that's how AI writing gets called slop. Fabricated statistics, made-up studies, and invented examples are the #1 AI-writing failure mode — they're confident, specific, and wrong. Our system prompt explicitly blocks this. If you need more substance, paste additional source notes into the input. If the source genuinely doesn't support the target length, the output will land slightly shorter than target but stay truthful.

QuillBot Expand is $9.95/mo bundled with paraphraser. Jasper is $39/mo+. Copy.ai is $36/mo. Wordtune Expand is $9.99/mo. All of them will invent content to hit target length — ours won't. Free.ai runs on self-hosted GPUs, no monthly subscription, and ships explicit "no fabrication" constraints in the system prompt. Edit quality is comparable; pricing and honesty are our edge.

Three failure modes: (1) On very short input (under 30 words), 3× still produces AI-tell transitional phrases despite our prompt — use 1.5× or 2× for tweets / headlines. (2) On already-dense text (well-edited prose), expansion can dilute the writing — use 1.5×. (3) Bullet → prose conversion on deeply nested outlines sometimes flattens hierarchy — pre-split by top-level bullet. Always read the output: if you see "Moreover" / "Furthermore" / "In today's fast-paced world", the model slipped past our blocklist.

Clarify: wherever the source compresses an idea, unpack it with a short explanatory clause. Transitions: connect adjacent points with "because", "as a result", "for example" — no "Moreover" filler. Concrete: replace abstract language with the specific instance the context implies. Rephrase: after each important claim, add a second phrasing from a different angle (useful for pedagogy). Bullets → prose: convert outline input into flowing prose with topic sentences and transitions.

It will preserve your voice at 1.5× and mostly preserve it at 2×. At 3× expansion the output lands in a more neutral register. If you want to keep your voice while expanding heavily, run 2× twice rather than 3× once, or run 3× then /text/humanizer/ Natural mode. For brand-voice matching, no generic expander works — you need fine-tuning we don't offer.

Yes — pick Method: "Bullets → prose". Each bullet becomes a sentence or small paragraph with topic-sentence structure and explicit transitions. For best results, write clear bullets with enough content (not just one-word outline labels), and pick 2× or 3× target depending on bullet density.

Nine direct picks + auto-detect: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic. Quality is highest in English. Non-English expansion works but occasionally the expanded phrasing feels translation-tinged — review for idiom accuracy.

Up to 3,000 words per run. Longer inputs don't need expansion — Text Expander is for short → long, not long → longer. For long-document elaboration, use /text/rewriter/ Expand mode which handles up to 5,000 words.

Text is sent to Free.ai's self-hosted GPUs, processed, and discarded. We do not train on user inputs. We log only timestamp + token cost for billing — never the source text. Generation history (signed-in users) stores a 200-char preview.

Yes. POST to /v1/chat/ with the expander system prompt (bearer auth, monthly limits per plan). Useful for outline → article pipelines, notes → report workflows, or bulk draft expansion. Full snippets at /api/.
