True outpainting requires generative AI — the model has to invent plausible new pixels that continue the scene's lighting, perspective, and composition. SDXL inpaint can do this but slowly and inconsistently. The premium models (FLUX Kontext, Seedream 4 Edit, Ideogram v3) are tuned specifically for outpainting and produce clean continuous extensions. Free Real-ESRGAN can only enhance + resize.

FLUX Kontext Pro (~45K tokens) is the best general-purpose outpainter — fast, natural-looking. Seedream 4 Edit (~78K) wins on photorealism for outdoor scenes / interiors. Ideogram v3 (~101K) preserves the exact composition + style of the original best — pick when the input is illustrated / has distinctive art direction you want preserved.

Photoshop Generative Expand ($22.99/mo Photography plan) is the closest direct competitor — same workflow, layer-based, mask-aware. Adobe Firefly Web ($5-23/mo) is the browser version. Free.ai matches Photoshop's feature set browser-based, with model choice (Photoshop locks you to Adobe Firefly) and free-tier access (no credit card to try).

Inpainting fills in a region INSIDE the existing image (you paint a mask). Expand adds new canvas OUTSIDE the existing image (no mask needed — the boundary is the new canvas edge). Use Inpainting to fix or change something within the photo; use Expand to add scenery beyond the original frame.

Works well: extending landscapes (sky, water, ground), interior walls / floors / ceilings, simple repeating textures (grass, sand, brick). Works poorly: extending across complex subjects (faces, hands, intricate machinery — the AI may guess wrong), extending dramatic perspective shifts (90% expansion changes geometry the model has not seen). Smaller expansions (10-50%) consistently outperform massive ones.

Yes — pick "Left only", "Right only", "Top only", or "Bottom only" from the direction chips. Useful for adding negative space for headline overlays on banner ads, for extending scenery on one side without altering the focus subject, or for cropping recovery on one side only.

Yes — premium models are explicitly prompted to preserve the original area exactly. Only the new expanded area gets generated content. Verify on download — if you spot any change in the original area, regenerate or switch models. Self-hosted fallback may slightly modify edges.
