How lecture transcription works

  1. Upload your lecture recording (up to 2GB, ~14 hours).
  2. Adjust chapter sensitivity and keep flashcards on (the default).
  3. Start transcription — for long lectures, check email-when-done and close the tab.
  4. Export study TXT (glossary + flashcards + transcript) or flashcards JSON to import into Anki.

Lecture Transcription — FAQ

Lecture mode generates chapter markers by silence-gap AND topic-shift detection, extracts key concepts into a glossary of technical terms, and auto-generates flashcard-style Q/A pairs for study. Study aids are LLM-generated — we disclose they should be verified against the source.

Coverage is high (the flashcards touch the major concepts in your lecture) but specifics can hallucinate — we flag this on the result page. Treat flashcards as a starting point and review each one against the transcript before final use.

We run an LLM pass over the transcript looking for pivot phrases ("next, let us talk about...", "moving on to...") and semantic-embedding breaks. The threshold slider lets you tune aggressiveness — low for a densely-packed 90-minute lecture, high for a casual seminar.

Otter has an education tier at 300 minutes free / month but no flashcard generation. We produce the flashcards + glossary + topic-based chapters in one pass.

Notta is $13.99/month for 10 hours. We charge per-minute (~$0.003/min) with no monthly cap. Our AI-study-aid extraction adds ~500 tokens (about $0.00067) per lecture.

Fireflies is built for meetings + sales calls. We generate lecture-specific artifacts (flashcards, glossary) that Fireflies does not offer at all.

Yes — we export flashcards as a JSON array of question/answer pairs. Anki imports JSON/CSV natively — paste into Anki Import from file dialog and map fields.

99 languages on Whisper-large-v3 for the transcription step. The AI study-aid extraction works best in English + major European + CJK languages. Other languages still transcribe, but flashcards may need more manual cleanup.

Up to 2GB — roughly a 14-hour lecture at 128 kbps. Standard 60-90 min lectures come in well under. Use the Heavy-task banner email-when-done option so you can close the tab.

Spoken math ("x squared minus two y") transcribes as text, not LaTeX — you will need to reformat manually. For slide-based math, pair with our /pdf/ocr/ on the slide deck for LaTeX-ready equations.

Yes — the auto-generated summary + concept glossary + flashcards together are a compact study guide. Or feed the transcript into /write/summarize/ for a custom-length version.

Uploaded files are deleted after transcription. Transcripts live in your /account/ for 7 days (paid) / 24 hours (free). For exam-prep where you do not want the audio lingering, download the TXT + delete the row.
